Our New Norm
With all that is going on, I will venture to say that you’re probably not in your normal routine. I don’t think anyone is. Full transparency, I wore the same shirt and pair of shorts everyday last week (don’t judge me).
But when you’re not leaving your home for multiple days at a time, knowing the latest style hacks for tall guys, doesn’t really seem at all a high priority. However, because we’re all stuck inside trying not to lose our minds, here are some style hacks every tall guy needs to know!
10. FIND BRANDS THAT DO CATER TO YOUR BODY TYPE
Not one body type is created equal. This is especially so for tall people. There can be multiple variables that make a person tall. You could have two guys that measure exactly at the same exact height, but it could be for different reasons.
Guy A could be 6’7’’ because he has extremely long legs with a short torso. Their pant inseam could be a 38’’ but it’s possible their shirt size is a Medium Tall. Guy B is also 6’7’’ but he could have a longer torso which would require him to wear a Large or even possibly X-Large Tall shirt but he may only need to wear pants in a 34’’ inseam.
09. ROCK THE TANK TOP THE RIGHT WAY
If you’re into the streetwear tank top trend, do your thing! Pull this look off more effectively by adding a necklace or some type of simple accessory to really make it work. Also be mindful of how deep the neckline goes. Anything that dips below your collarbone is getting into the girl zone, or even possibly the deuschy zone.
08. LESS IS MORE WITH DENIM
Here at Heights, our designs are built on the philosophy of clean and simple, so naturally that same philosophy is applied on our take on denim. We prefer the “less is more” concept when looking at denim for tall guys, especially if it’s something you’re wearing to work or using for a class presentation. Look for jeans with what’s called “self-stitching”, which means the thread color matches the color of the fabric. You know those denim brands that have all those elaborate designs on the back pockets? Yeah, stay far away from those.
07. FIND THE RIGHT PANT FIT
All too often we see tall guys wearing pants that are too big for their height/weight proportion. This is very common in the tall community because the default is to go a size or two larger so they get the right length. Oftentimes the result is a terrible look.
When looking and trying on pants, you should be able to feel the fabric on your legs. If you can’t feel the fabric fall on your legs, they’re probably too big.
Also consider the bottom of the pant legs. Since most taller guys have a larger shoe size, if you have a size 13 or larger, it is best to seek a pant with a bottom leg opening of around 9.5 inches.
06. ROCK THE JORDANS OR NOT?
We get it. You spent your last paycheck on those Jordan 5’s and come hell or high water you’re going to make them work. Trust us when we tell you that you’re doing yourself no favors forcing those things on your feet when wearing your skinny jeans.
As a tall guy, it is very important to be mindful of the type of pants you're wearing with your shoe selection. For instance, when wearing those slim cut jeans or pants, leave the big clunky Jordans in your closet.
Rather, throw on some shoes with a narrow toe and a slimmed down sole. This will create a much sleeker line on your body which will be more visually appealing and won’t draw attention to the fact that you wear a size 20 which will ultimately lead to some of those annoying questions and comments about your feet size.
05. WEAR PRINTS THE RIGHT WAY
The fact is you’re tall. Many of you, SUPER tall. When you walk into a room people notice regardless of what you’re wearing. So when wearing prints, the best practice is to keep the prints small and subdue.
If you’re wearing stripes, keep from choosing super chunky or wide stripes while making sure they’re not too thin either.
Camouflage works well and it helps that it's currently in style these days. Look for a nice blend of blacks, grays and blues. Remember that the key to all of this is subtly.
04. FOR THE SKINNY TALL GUY
If you’re of the long and lean type, when looking for casual button-ups, look for items with chest pockets.
THE PRESENCE OF CHEST POCKETS THICKENS THE TORSO AND WILL ADD SOME BROADNESS TO THE APPEARANCE OF A SLIM BODY.
We mentioned stripes in #5 but if you’re a slim tall guy, it is best to stick with horizontal stripes, as this will broaden your appearance as well.
03. TRICK UP YOUR SLEEVE
Sleeves have always been a big paint point for all types of tall guys. It’s the number one complaint we hear about when polling our customers at Heights Apparel.
When dealing with a shirt that has sleeves not quite long enough for your body, try adding a watch to make up where the sleeves fall short (use a bracelet on the opposite arm). Another option is to try is layering another longer button down shirt underneath the shorter sleeved shirt.
If neither of those work for you, you can always go with the time trusted default—push and roll the sleeves up.
02. MASK IT WITH LAYERS
As mentioned with the sleeves in #3, layering can be a tall guy’s best friend when it comes to fashion.
Oftentimes you have items in your closet that are short. Use layering by wearing the longer fit item underneath the short fit item. This psychological effect will give the appearance the top layer is longer. Layering is an easy and effective method that will create longer lines on the tall body type.
01. KEEP YOUR TAILOR ON SPEED DIAL
Even though our very goal at Heights Apparel is to provide quality tall clothing for guys so you don’t have to go to the tailor, we still keep our tailor on speed dial.
HAVING A GO-TO TAILOR ISN’T JUST A TALL GUY HACK, IT’S AN ANY GUY HACK.
Having a go to tailor is not just a tall guy hack, it is an ANY guy hack. The key is to find a tailor you plan to use consistently. You want a tailor that you can go to and they understand your body type, much like finding a barber that understands how your hair grows and lays.
DON’T SETTLE BECAUSE YOU’RE TALL
For any tall guy, alterations are key to maximizing the overall look and the confidence of a guy. If the clothing feels tight or restrictive, take it to your tailor. If it looks dumpy—tailor it. Once you do, you’ll never regret it and your confidence will rise.
So there you have it. Tall men's clothing is not very easy to find, these are some easy to implement hacks with your current wardrobe and moving forward as you shop and look for clothing.
Please be safe and continue practicing social distancing and isolation!
