I still can't believe it's 2020 and the beginning of a new decade. Many people associate a new year with a fresh start and I'm all about setting new goals each year (both personally and for Heights Apparel), but according to a Forbes article, less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their New Year's resolutions after 30 days, and only 8% accomplish them. I don't know about you, but I'm determined NOT to be a part of that statistic and I want to share a few tips on how to set realistic goals and achieve success all year long.
1. Call It A Goal and Write It Down
A goal is defined as object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. We all have different types of goals, large and small, short term and long term, and I strongly believe that if you take a few minutes and write them down, they become tangible things to achieve vs. abstract thoughts in your mind.
2. Read Motivating Books or Articles
Over the last year, I read three books that stopped me in tracks and inspired me on many different levels:
You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero
The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
These books will help you build the right habits, change your outlook on life and learn about positive affirmations to ultimately help you achieve your goals.
3. Break Your Goals Down
If in order to achieve your larger scale goal, there are smaller steps to follow first, figure out what those are and just start somewhere. I find when I start feeling overwhelmed about where to begin, I stop myself, take a deep breath and start small. I have been using the Passion Planner for a few years and I love that I can keep everything together and organized from my yearly goals to my daily steps in achieving those goals. I love having a record and looking back and seeing everything I have done because that motivates me to keep going.
4. Give Yourself A Break
You have to cut yourself some slack. Some days will be better than other days, that's a fact. It's easy to go down a rabbit hole and feed off your negativity when you are having a bad day but it takes much more to know it will pass, put your head down and persevere. If you have read my story or watched the first video in the Make It Happen Series, then you know how Heights Apparel came to be. Sure, there were days I wanted to give up; there were failures and negativity...but I continue to push through because at the end of the day, this is my dream and I know that I can accomplish great things if I work hard and Make It Happen. There is no other choice.
5. Look Your Best, Feel Your Best, Do Your Best
People pick up on each other's energy whether it's good or bad. If you just rolled out of bed and are slumming around in sweatpants, you are putting out a vibe and a first impression to the world that you cannot get back. In my personal experience, when I look my best and wear what I'm comfortable and confident in, it affects everything from my mood to the work I produce. Especially if you're a tall guy, you want clothing that fits and compliments your personal style and in turn people will acknowledge the confidence and positive vibes you are exuding.
There are many articles about achieving success but only YOU can control YOUR own outcome. If you set goals, work hard and don't give up, you will achieve greatness.
